Healthy People 2010 is a Department of Health and Human Services publication which states the national health promotion and disease prevention objectives for the next decade. The Healthy People 2010 objective for adult lead exposure is to reduce (to zero) the number of adults who have blood lead concentrations of 25 mcg/dL or greater of whole blood. It is proposed that the adult lead objective will be achieved through a combination of: (1) OSHA's strategic initiative to reduce occupational lead exposures; (2) voluntary lead-industry initiatives such as those by the Lead Industries Association Incorporated and the Battery Council International; (3) lead initiatives by the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists; and (4) the specific interventions of the 28 States in CDC's Adult Blood Lead Epidemiology and Surveillance (ABLES) program. This presentation focuses on ABLES State intervention activities to prevent adult lead over-exposure. ABLES State interventions include: (1) conducting follow-up interviews with physicians, employers, and workers; (2) investigating work sites; (3) providing technical assistance; (4) providing referrals for consultation and/or enforcement; and (5) developing and disseminating educational materials and outreach programs. Currently, participating ABLES states vary widely in the depth and scope of their intervention programs. Information will be presented on ongoing or completed State intervention activities, specifically concerning, impact, longevity, acceptance and associated costs.
