Core Competencies to Practice Local Environmental Health: Summary of an Expert Panel

An expert panel representing thirteen national public health associations with an interest in local environmental health activities convened in late February, 2000. These representatives developed recommendations for the core competencies necessary for the effective implementation of environmental health at local health departments. The recommendations of the panel will be discussed. The relationship of the environmental health core competencies to the Healthy People 2010 objectives as well as to the need to strengthen the environmental health workforce at the local level will be discussed. Procedures for implementation at thelocal level will be discussed.

Learning Objectives: At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to: 1. identify the core competecies needed to effectively implement local environmental health activities; 2. compare recommendations of the expert panel on competencies to those identified in their health departments; 3. work to improve the practice of local environmental health
