Ann E. Garwick, PhD and Sally Auger, MA. School of Nursing, University of Minnesota, 6-101 Weaver Densford Hall, 308 Harvard St. S.E, Minneapolis, MN 55359, 612 624-1141, garwi001@tc.umn.edu

The purpose of this project is to produce and disseminate a culturally sensitive video about the impact of asthma on Indian children and their families. The "Breathing a Word" video was developed in partnership with Indian youth and families at Little Earth of United Tribes, Inc., graduate learners and faculty in the Community University Partnership in Education and Service (CUPES) project, and Allies: Media/Art which is a Dakota-owned media production company located in Minneapolis, Mn. In order to evaluate the success of this collaboration, process and outcome data has been collected from all participants. Key factors that have ensured the success of the partnership include: 1) knowledge and experience in the Indian community in the Phillips neighborhood; 2) flexibility and creativity on the part of youth and staff, 3) skills in working with Indian youth, and 4) balance in partnerships between the University and Allies staff and the community. This project has increased the awareness of asthma as a major child health issue in the Indian community and sensitized health care professionals to the cultural implications of living with asthma.

Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to: 1) identify issues facing Indian youth with asthma 2) identify factors that have ensured the success of this university-community partnership
