The Ministry of Health of Peru is currently embarked in a significant effort to integrate its several vertical Maternal and Child Health Programs into an integrated, comprehensive approach. This approach, named Comprehensive Health Care is currently being applied by the GOP/WB-funded Basic Health and Nutrition Project at nearly 300 health centers and posts in four sites in Peru: two districts of Metropolitan Lima and two rural areas in the Departments of Cuzco and Piura. To design and pilot test this approach, the Project called for an international bid which awarded the contract to CARE Peru. CARE Peru has nearly 30 years experience in the country, mostly on community-based Primary Health Care. The presentation will focus on (a)the impact that the Comprehensive Health Care approach has had on the quality of care of the Government health facilities, and (b) opportunities and limitations that a community-based NGO faces while providing technical assistance to the MOH.

Learning Objectives: The participants will obtain a clear understanding on how to integrate diverse Government MCH Programs into an integrated package of services
