Purpose: to foster active dialog among APHA members about the collection, coding, availability and use of injury data, in the tradition of our annual dynamic data discussions. Topics: 1) ICECI instrument for ED data: NCIPC will report on a pilot test of an "external cause" instrument for ED data, and discuss implications for its use. Of particular interest is its adaptation for use in CPSC's newly expanded NEISS system to capture ED data on all injuries. 2) "External cause" matrix for ICD-10: NCHS has facilitated efforts to develop the intent/ mechanism matrix for ICD-10; we will present the proposed matrix and discuss its features. This is timely since 1999 mortality data was coded with ICD-10. 3) Usefulness of data on WWW: We will prepare, circulate and discuss an inventory of interactive national and state injury databases currently available on the web; compare and contrast features; discuss among participants the usefulness of existing www-based data and what improvements might be suggested. Focus will be on user-friendliness and usefulness for prevention program design & evaluation. 4) International developments: Participants will be briefed on the results of the ICE on Injury Statistics meeting in Delhi, India in March 2000, and discuss implications for the USA.

Learning Objectives: Session objectives: 1) increase injury data expertise among APHA members; 2) draw on participants' expertise to improve data systems & uses; 3) address difficult issues and explore potential solutions; 4) create active networks among injury data providers & users
