Tested and validated measures of the markers of social capital (social integration and civic involvement) have been developed by the authors. These measures have been tested and refined through surveys in over 20 communities around the United States between 1998 and 1999. In one case study community, social capital data were collected through surveys of 150 community members, who were also participants in community discussion groups. The results from the community surveys were used to plan and refine service delivery and financing strategies as part of a community process to improve access to primary health care. Specifically, strategies incorporated community involvement, community decision making, and cultural sensitivity elements. Examples from the case study community will be provided.

Learning Objectives: At the close of this session, participants will be able to list the markers of social capital used in this project, and describe how social capital data collected from a community were used to plan interventions aimed at increasing access to primary care services
