The CareTeam Model, where parish/synagogue teams are formed to provide practical, emotional and spiritual support to a person living with HIV/AIDS (PLWA) is an effective tool for engaging the faith community in HIV/AIDS prevention. Utilizing existing resources (liturgy, preaching, religious education) to gain access to congregations, then providing education and support, the model enables laypeople and clergy to provide a compassionate response to PLWA. This contact with an infected person helps to break resistance and open the community to incorporating HIV prevention interventions through their different education and service ministries. This model is particularly effective in overcoming resistance in African-American churches, providing an approach that respects faith traditions while prompting effective responses to the challenges of HIV/AIDS. This presentation will provide a description of the model, as well as strategies for “breaking the silence” and adding this important community voice to HIV prevention efforts.

Identify strategies for overcoming faith community resistance to issues surrounding HIV. 3.
