Menopause Deconstructed

Judith A. Costlow, MS, Santa Fe Health Education Project, 712 Gonzales Rd, Santa Fe, NM 87501, 505-820-1036, j.costlow@att.net

Menopause has become an obsolete event in the lives of women according to medical practioners and pharmaceuticals. It has been reduced to the moment when the last period ends. The Perimenopause and postmenopause now are viewed as the new "diseases," needing medical intervention and new marketing strategies for drugs. Has research for menopause stopped, and or shifted? And what is happening now that we have entered a new century? Have any of the hormonal trials that were started in the 90's shown any definitive results? What are alternatives to hormone treatment? These questions and more will be discussed.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session the participant (learner) will be able to: 1. Define the term menopause 2. Identify hormonal trials being researched 3. List alternative treatments for menopause

Keywords: Menopause,
