Deconstructing Menopause

Kathleen Macpherson, PhD, School of Nursing, University of Southern Maine, 96 Falmouth Street, Portland, ME 04103, 207-780-4801, macpher@usm.maine.edu

After years of perimenopause being virtually ignored, several research studies in the 1990s have separated and defined the perimenopausal phase from the general term of menopause. This paper will address the changes that occur in this transient phase and the important implications that they have for women. The following questions will be raised and discussed. Has perimenopause become medicalized? Have researchers studied women's own perimenopausal experiences? Is hormone therapy being offered to perimenopausal women? What alternative treatments are being used?

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session the particpant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1 Define the term perimenopause 2 List treatments currently being prescribed for perimenopause 3 Identify alternative perimenopause treatments
