Overcoming the Streets: An Exploration of the Wisdom of Youths There is a paucity of research about the perseverance of marginalized street youths who embark on the journey to transition off the streets. This phenomenological study focused on the unique strengths of individuals who have successfully negotiated this process and the ways in which they did so. Eleven former street youths were recruited through the assistance of local agencies and advertisements in local college newspapers. Data were collected through in-depth, one-to-one interviews that provided the opportunity for youths to share their stories about life before, during, and after homelessness. Through participation in in-depth discourse about their experience of being homeless, youths gained insight into their personal strengths and provided valuable feedback regarding the diverse forms of support that facilitate successful transition off the streets. The results reveal the spirit and resiliency of these young victors and provide evidence that qualitative approaches are an effective method for understanding the complex health and social issues of today. The findings fill a gap in the existing literature, and create a foundation for future research efforts that will ultimately inform health and social service practice and policy.
