Diana Conti, Executive Director, Marin Institute for the Prevention of Alcohol and Other Drug Problems, 24 Belvedere Street, San Rafael, CA 94901, 415-456-5692 x 3120, dianac@marininstitute.org

This presentation is based on findings in a paper developed with directors of twelve state coalitions through their experiences with a four-year project to reduce underage drinking by organizing state coalitions to advocate for alcohol policy change. The paper includes guidelines for best practices for a coalition-based approach, and recommendations to strengthen the innovative initiative in order to build a stronger national movement for alcohol policy change.

Recommendations include methods to: build, motivate, and sustain coalitions; select an appropriate host agency for the coalition and maintain a successful relationship with that agency; overcome barriers to mobilizing groups to work on environmental prevention strategies; successfully involve youth; develop strategies for advocacy work within funding constraints on lobbying; develop coordinated efforts across states; and implement media advocacy efforts.

Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to 1)identify challenges in working with coalitions for policy change; 2) identify methods to address challenges; 3) identify best practices guidelines for working with coalitions
