Abstract #7100

Policies Regarding Sexual Expression in Nursing Homes

Douglas (NMI) Holmes, PhD, Research Division, Hebrew Home for the Aged at Riverdale (NY), 5901 Palisade Avenue, Riverdale, NY 10471, (718) 581-1741, dholmes666@aol.com

In the context of attitudinal data collected during several surveys conducted in several states, as well as in South Africa, the presenter will describe and discuss policies and procedures which govern staff response to sexual expression and intimacy among both cognitively intact and demented nursing home residents. The development of these policies and procedures will be described, in such fashion as to facilitate replication elsewhere. To illustrate the topics reflected in these policies and procedures, he will present and discuss eight case vignettes, drawn from actual experience in nursing homes, which reflect a number of commonly-encountered situations involving sexual expression. Emphasis during this presentation will be placed on staff training and subsequent interventions, the apparent results of these interventions, and plans for the future regarding this topic.

Learning Objectives: Participants will learn of current staff attitudes and practices regarding sexual expression among both cognitively intact and dementing nursing home residents. Participants will learn about (and be given copies of) policies and procedures developed by one nursing home, together with vignettes of behaviors which are serving as the bases for videotaped instructional materials for staff. Finally, participants will be better-prepared to inaugurate staff and family instructional programs dealing with sexual expression
