Rural Egypt has no public programs providing desperately needed home health visits for primary care except for single visit post-partum follow up for mothers registered at a rural health center. This represents only a small percentage of women. During 1999 in Meleeg Village, there were 6020 women of reproductive age, with 416 attending for ante-natal care and 553 home deliveries. In a study funded by USAID registered nurse interns worked collaboratively with rural health nurses to make 5 home visits to pregnant women and their newborns and infants. During these visits, health and demographic data was collected using 5 quantitative instruments and a single qualitative instrument. Preliminary results show an improvement in health indicators for this population.

Learning Objectives: 1.Explain the system for providing pre-natal care to women in Menoufiya governorate; 2. Describe the research project; 2.. Examine care of rural women before and following a research intervention
