Older Chinese immigrants are one of the fastest growing segments of California's predominantly minority population. This paper summarizes the findings of a pilot study to identify unmet needs for health care and social services among older Chinese immigrants residing in Los Angeles and Orange counties. A non-probablity sample of 100 immigrants from mainland China age 55 and older was selected with the assistance of health organizations, service agencies, social clubs, religious groups, and the community-at-large. Interviews were conducted with each subject to 1) identify unmet needs for health care including medical, dental, and psychological; 2) assess current and anticipated needs for support services related to activities of daily living and social functioning; 3) identify preferred living arrangements given the health care and service needs associated with aging; and 4) propose policies and practices for a continuum of care and services that is in keeping with the attitudes, values, and beliefs of the older Chinese immigrant community. These issues were examined in relation to age, gender, SES, perceived health status, and social support. The data were analyzed using descriptive and multivariate statistical techniques. Qualitative data were also collected to suppport the interpretation of quantitative findings. Together, these data suggest the need for a multidimensional continuum of care and services throughout the aging process which addresses the traditions and perspectives of the older Chinese immigrant population.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to: 1) identify unmet needs for health care and social services among older Chinese immigrants; 2) explain current and future needs for assistance with activities of daily living within this population; and 3) assess the efficacy of health and social services in light of the attitudes, values, and beliefs of the older Chinese immigrant population
