In order to address the need for culturally-appropriate and effective education for the farmworker community, a video was developed aimed at teaching migrant and seasonal families ways to protect their children from pesticide exposure. The project occurred as part of a research partnership between the Oregon Health Sciences University and the Oregon Child Development Coalition. This presentation will outline the steps of the community-based process: (1) identification of the optimal educational method and content, (2) evaluation of existing educational materials on pesticides, (3) development of the selected method, and (4) assessing the effectiveness of the video as an intervention. Focus groups were conducted with migrant farmworkers to revealed perceived need for education and desired content, method, and delivery. Four currently used educational methods were then evaluated for satisfaction, preference, recall ability and knowledge change. Based on these first two steps we produced a pesticide exposure video directed to the protection of children. To determine the effectiveness of the video, knowledge, satisfaction and self-reported behaviors were assessed with migrant farmworkers. Parents had significant change in pesticide knowledge and an increased in self-reported behaviors post viewing of the video. Knowledge was measured at two time points to assess retention of knowledge. The findings to date point to the need to assess the impact of the video on behavior and to test the video effectiveness with different populations of seasonal and migrant farmworkers. In addition to the effectiveness of the video, we will discuss the challenging process of implementing this community-based project.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, the participants will be able to: 1. discuss the development and evaluation of a pesticide exposure prevention video 2. discuss four lessons learned from a community-based research project
