Objectives: To identify demographic and behavioral factors that predict unprotected anal intercourse. Study Design: Cross Sectional, mail administered survey. Method: We analyzed self-reported adherence, demographic, quality of life, medication, health status, sexual behavior, and drug and alcohol use data from 730 racially diverse gay men with HIV/AIDS. The sample was drawn from clients of an AIDS Service Organization (ASO). The outcome variable for the study was unprotected anal intercourse (UAI). UAI was assigned if subjects reported any unprotected insertive or receptive anal intercourse in the past six months with HIV-negative sexual partners or partners whose HIV status was unknown to subjects. Multiple logistic regression was used to identify factors predictive of UAI at a significance level of p<.05. Results: 40% of the sample reported unprotected anal intercourse as defined above. Study findings indicate that being between 19 and 39 years of age predicts UAI. Inhalant use, reporting multiple sex partners, and feeling the effects of drinking alcohol or using drugs before having sex in the past six months also predict UAI. Conclusion: Understanding the sexual risk behaviors of gay men living with HIV/AIDS is crucial to the development of targeted HIV prevention intervention programs to decrease unprotected anal intercourse, and thus prevent HIV infections, among men who have sex with men. These findings provide information that can be used in developing prevention programs for HIV positive gay men. Moreover, gay men between 19 and 39 years of age should be specifically targeted.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the in-service training, the participants in this session will be able to: (1) Identify predictors of unprotected anal sex among sexually active HIV-Positive Gay Men. (2) Identify the rate of unprotected anal sex among sexually active HIV-Positive Gay Men across demographic categories. (3) Use information provided to develop prevention programs for HIV Positive Gay Men
