Use of a consumer advisory group in an HIV/AIDS treatment adherence, health outcomes and cost study

This presentation will describe a model for forming and implementing a consumer advisory panel for a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and National Institute of Health (NIH) funded HIV/AIDS Treatment Adherence, Health Outcomes and Cost Study. The benefits of consumer advisory panel participation in research studies will be outlined. Strategies for engaging consumers and care providers in this aspect of research will be articulated. Specific barriers to research participation which have been identified and addressed by this consumer panel will be discussed.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able 1)to identify key components of a successful consumer advisory group, 2)to describe steps needed to implement a consumer advisory group and 3to articulate barriers to research participation which a consumer advisory group can assist in addressing
