Abstract #8150

Tobacco- versus cancer-control legislation: How do the states measure up?

Jamie F. Chriqui, MHS and Deborah A. Reichmann, JD, MPH. Legislative and Policy Analysis Program, The MayaTech Corporation, 8737 Colesville Road, 7th Floor, Silver Spring, MD 20910-3921, (301) 587-1600, jamie@mayatech.com

Using data from the National Cancer Institute’s State Cancer Legislative Database (SCLD) Program, we will present the results of a comparative analysis of state tobacco- versus cancer-control legislation. Specifically, we will present both time-series and cross-sectional analyses of the enactment of state laws addressing tobacco- and cancer-control and will compare the variability within and across states of these legislative actions. The results of the analyses will be presented by state, by geographic region (using the Bureau of the Census’ regional designations), and by tobacco growing versus non-tobacco growing status.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to: (1) summarize the trends in tobacco- and cancer-control legislative actions, and (2) compare the variability within and across states of the enactment of tobacco- versus cancer-control legislation
