The State Inpatient Databases (SID) consist of all community hospitals and all discharges from participating HCUP states. HCUP uses the American Hospital Association’s definition of community hospitals: short-term, non-Federal, general and specialty hospitals, and exclude long-term hospitals, psychiatric facilities, and alcoholism/chemical dependency treatment facilities. For the 1997 data year, all 22 HCUP states contribute data to the SID, comprising nearly 60% of all hospital discharges in the U.S. Data elements consist of “core data elements” which are uniformly available across all states, and “supplemental data elements” which are state-specific variables unique to that state but potentially important for research purposes. The SID are particularly valuable for market area studies, evaluations of small area variations, and special studies that use state-specific variables such as race/ethnicity or detailed charges. Thirteen of the 22 SIDs are distributed through the HCUP Central Distributor, a distribution mechanism funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) from which researchers can purchase data directly. SIDs can be obtained for research purposes upon signing a data use agreement that stipulates that individual patients and hospitals will not identified in reports. Examples of studies using the SID and information on obtaining SID databases will be provided.
