Adolescence is often a period of stress. Some youth exhibit risky behavior during this time; for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender (GLBT) youth additional factors increase the possibility of risky conduct. GLBT youth are more likely to: • attempt suicide more often than heterosexual youth • experience increased levels of drug and alcohol use • be victims of violence in school • be poorly accepted in their homes • experience homelessness • be isolated from peers and others

In February, 1998, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) initiated a project to address the health needs of GLBT youth within the state. Contacts were made to assess the needs of rural and urban communities and a workgroup formed to advise the project. A Community Tool Kit for Supporting Bay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Youth Health for community leaders and health professionals was developed. This document describes the health needs of GLBT youth as a public health issue and presents strategies and resources for use in local communities.

This poster session will center on the health needs of GLBT youth and the leadership role of public health nurses in utilizing community strategies to address those health needs. These strategies support the public health nurse's role in working with health care professionals, schools, community leaders, youth organizations and other community groups.
