The HCUP hospital data that comprise the State Inpatient Databases (SID) are being used to develop additional specialized datasets for research purposes. The first dataset, available since 1995 through the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), is the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS), covering the data years 1988-1997. The NIS is a stratified sample of hospitals from the SID drawn to approximate a 20% national sample of hospitals. All discharges from each sampled hospital are included in the NIS. For the 1997 data year, the NIS includes about 1,000 hospitals and over 7 million discharges. The NIS can be used to perform research on hospital utilization, generalizable to the national level. Its large sample size make it especially appropriate for studying uncommon conditions and procedures. Including all discharges from each hospital allows for construction of hospital-level case-mix measures and assessment of hospital-level performance, although individual institutions cannot be identified in reports. It is the largest all-payer inpatient database in the U.S. and is the only all-payer hospital database that includes information on total charges for hospitalization. The NIS can be obtained for research purposes through the National Technical Information Service for $160 per data year (upon signing a data use agreement). Examples of studies using the NIS will be provided. New data sets based on the SID will also be described. These datasets are being constructed to facilitate research on specific populations and issues, such as minority health or children’s use of hospital services.
