Just as the delivery of health care is moving to the outpatient setting, HCUP is reflecting this trend and is collecting data from the outpatient arena as well. HCUP now includes several years of outpatient data from nine of its partner states. Outpatient data collection began with Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey and New York, each of which contributed hospital-based ambulatory surgery data, beginning with the 1988 data year. Four additional states now contribute ambulatory surgery data (Florida, South Carolina, Wisconsin, and Utah), including data from free-standing centers. The data are comprehensive, including all facilities and all procedures. The newest pilot under the State Outpatient Databases (SOD) is emergency department data, currently contributed by Connecticut. The data elements are similar to those described under the SID, and include the ability to link across inpatient and outpatient settings for some states. These newest datasets are a critical piece to understanding and analyzing the full spectrum of health care delivery as medical technology, practice patterns and delivery systems continue to change. HCUP will distribute the SOD for partner states through the HCUP Central Distributor, as described under the SID. The project plans to rapidly expand the outpatient portfolio of databases, with priority to the emergency department data. Examples of studies using the SOD will be provided.
