Abstract #8594

Medicaid data research: real-world examples

Medicaid claims data have been used by various researchers to answer questions in the arenas of epidemiology, health access, health care utilization, and health policy. Examples from peer-reviewed literature will be presented. The presenter will also provide examples of his own work, linking Medicaid claims data to birth records in order to assess perinatal outcomes. Other current Medicaid research projects will also be used to demonstrate analytical methods, and specific technical challenges related to the data set. Issues of data loss due to Medicaid capitation will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives: The participant will be able to: 1. Give at least two examples of research questions answered using Medicaid claims data. 2. Identify at least two technical challenges in using Medicaid data, and strategies for overcoming these obstacles. 3. Describe the potential for linking Medicaid claims data to other data such as birth data or other vital statistics
