Holistic approaches to healthy aging

Adam Burke, PhD, MPH, Institute for Holistic Healing Studies, San Francisco State University, 1600 Holloway Ave, San Francisco, CA 94132, 415-440-8553, aburke@pacbell.net

Life expectancy is increasing due to improved standards of living and advances in medicine. As a consequence we find a growing elderly population addressing chronic health care problems associated with aging. This includes conditions such as arthritis, incontinence and senile dementia. It has been estimated that the loss of the ability to live independently as a result of such morbidity factors costs the country about $26 billion a year in health care dollars. Given these social changes it is important that researchers begin to look for cost effective ways to improve health outcomes for the elderly, helping the expanding aging population to be healthy, independent, have access to available and affordable care, and maintain a meaningful role in society. A growing body of evidence suggests that holistic modalities may be effective in the treatment of many chronic conditions prevalent among older adults. A literature survey was conducted to examine research in this developing area. Method: a computer search of several major databases was conducted looking at various alternative modalities, including autogenic training, chiropractic, biofeedback, Chinese medicine, nutritional supplements, movement therapies, meditation, and other lifestyle strategies, for preventing and managing chronic conditions of the elderly. The review focused on studies conducted from 1990 to the present. Results: numerous reports indicated the potential for alternative therapies to assist the elderly with reduction of symptoms or the slowing of progression of various debilitating problems. Discussion: although considerable encouraging evidence exists, much of it is anecdotal and more controlled studies are warranted.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Describe the role of alternative health care with geriatric populations. 2. List several therapies with evidence of benefit to the elderly. 3. Discuss the implications of alternative health methods for national policy, cost containment, and improved quality of life for the elderly
