The 1-2-3 Smokefree Program (developed with funding from the National Cancer Institute) is a video-based smoking cessation program delivered via the Internet to worksites. Worksites from across the Unites States were recruited to participate in a randomized clinical trial using a wait-list control design. The Web-based interactive program includes material explicitly tailored to the characteristics of 12 distinct sub-populations, differing on age, race/ethnicity, and gender. Tailored information on nicotine replacement therapy, Zyban, benefits and barriers to quitting, tips on dealing with difficult situations, cravings, and preventing relapse is presented by doctors and ex-smokers. Additional features of the program include an e-mail reminder of quit dates and return dates. A chat function was also available for participants. Interested participants were referred to the study site via e-mail. Screening questions, informed consent, and a pre-test were administered on-line; participants then were randomized to treatment (immediate access to the program) or wait-list control (access to the program in three months). Post-tests were administered immediately following the intervention and a follow-up survey was administered on-line three months later. Recruitment efforts, participant characteristics, hurdles encountered, results of the trial, and implications for the use of multimedia behavior change programs will be presented.
