This paper provides a synopsis of the 3-year Workplace Managed Care Substance Abuse Prevention and Early Intervention (WMC)initiative funded through the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP). It provides an analysis of successful WMC interventions within the context of workplace and managed care and policy implications for adoption of these programs into other workplace and public health settings. The paper reviews major findings of 9 grantees and the cross-site analysis; describes, in detail, methodological issues related to doing applied research in workplace and managed care settings; synthesizes issues related to confidentiality of data and its implications for doing this type of research; and provides next steps for future workplace managed care research.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, participants will be able to (1) understand the complex changes and interactions within and between workplaces and managed care settings in delivering substance abuse prevention interventions to employees and their families and (2) recognize successful workplace managed care substance abuse prevention and early intervention intervention in other workplace and public health settings for future adoption
