The AIDS Education and Training Centers across the country are mandated by the Health Resources and Services Administration to provide higher level training, such as clinical tutorials, for physicians and advanced practice nurses. It has been our general experience that physicians who are not treating large numbers of patients with HIV disease do not desire this level of training. If clinical tutorials are offered to them, even at their clinic site, many times these offers are refused. Physicians who ARE treating large numbers of patients with HIV disease frequently are the trainers utilized for these clinical tutorials or have already participated in similar training through other venues. We seek to address physician needs while meeting training mandates. Methods to find common ground and meet the objectives of funders and trainees will be presented.

Learning Objectives: Following this presentation, the participants will be able to: (1) Cite SC physicians' expressed needs for trainings other than clinical tutorials; (2) Discuss federal mandates to provide the higher level training programs for clinicians; and (3) Discuss options for meeting training mandates and physician-expressed needs in SC
