Abstract:

The advent of the Internet has dissolved scheduling, lifestyle, and location barriers, allowing people to access information, learn, and interact at their convenience. The objective of this study was to access the readiness of Health Services Administration students for education via internet-based resources. Distance learning programs are currently offered or being developed by several Health Care Administration programs. However, there is little available research regarding the readiness of these adult learners for distance learning education. A 25 item survey was designed to measure student familiarity with internet basics, web browsing, discussion groups, and the use of e-mail. Student access to computers and the internet both on and off campus was also assessed. Primary data for this study was obtained via an in-class survey distributed to students in a Department of Health Care Programs in the Spring of 1999. Ninety-eight students responded with useable data. The respondents were assigned to 4 categories, according to their computer knowledge and competencies. Eight-three percent of students perceive some computer knowledge deficiencies and thirty-nine percent perceive extensive computer training needs. Computer knowledge is particularly lacking in downloading files and participating in discussion groups on the web, with only forty-nine percent and thirty-seven percent, respectively, of respondents capable of performing these functions. Further research should be conducted to confirm the prevalence and depth of need for computer training. The findings of this study can be useful in developing a screening tool to identify students needing computer training prior to engaging in distance learning.

Learning Objectives: At the Conclusion of this Session, the Learners in this Session will be able to: 1. Recognize the limitations of student preparedness for Distance Learning Education. 2. Identify specific computer skill deficiencies of students that will require appropriate mediation prior to engaging in Distance Learning. 3. Identify two processes which can enhance student preparedness for Distance Learning
