The authors will describe a strategy used by a community-academic partnership to provide education and outreach clinics on Massage and Reiki to three population groups with little or no access to complementary healing modalities (i.e. people with chronic mental illness, low-income clients at urban community health centers, and undergraduate students at a large urban university). More specifically, the authors will provide information on the approach that the Center for Community Health Education, Research and Service (CCHERS)utilized to develop and pilot test an educational (and potential research) outreach strategy with members of its partnership (comprised of twelve community health centers, two universities, and several other health organizations in Boston, Massachusetts) and other relevant entities (e.g. the Boston Chapter of the Manic-Depressive Depressive Association). CCHERS has undertaken this effort, in part, to lay the groundwork for community-based research to access the potential palliative and health promotional value of Massage and/or Reiki for populations currently without structural access to such modalities.
