The School-based Substance Use Prevention Programs Study asked teachers and administrators about nonclassroom activities as well as classroom instruction they provide within their overall approach to school-based prevention. This presentation is an overview of the kinds of drug prevention activities that take place outside the classroom and the prevalence of these activities in schools and school districts with varying characteristics in the United States. Types of nonclassroom activities reported by schools and districts include formal Student Assistance Programs to identify students with drug-related problems and provide assistance, individual counseling, peer education and peer counseling, anti-drug use clubs, and student pledges not to use alcohol or other drugs. We also present our findings on participating teachers’ views on the relative effectiveness of certain classroom and nonclassroom prevention activities.
