Literature on partner violence has predominantly relied on research based on a western population making it difficult to estimate the level of violence in Asian American families. Results from some studies suggest that a significant number of Asian American women may be battered by their spouses. The purpose of this paper is to explore the underlying factors that prevent abused Asian American women from seeking help. Understanding partner violence among Asian American women is important for several reasons. First, the Asian American population is one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in the country. Second, this population is very diverse both linguistically and culturally. Third, Asian Americans underutilize medical and mental health services. Fourth, those who access mental health services may not disclose the presence of violence. A comprehensive review of the literature revealed six factors that influence the help-seeking behavior of abused Asian American women. These include knowledge about partner violence, cultural attitudes and beliefs towards intimate partner violence, cultural values, level of acculturation, social support and institutional barriers. Each factor is further examined within the cultural context of different subgroups of Asian American women.
Implications: Future research must focus on the nature and extent of help-seeking behavior of abused Asian American women. By understanding the commonalties and differences in the help-seeking behavior of the different subgroups of Asian American women, culturally appropriate interventions can be designed. Ultimately, early identification and intervention with this group can significantly reduce future violence and related health problems.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the presentation participants will be able to understand and identify at least five factors that impede or motivate help-seeking behavior of abused Asian American women
