School Nurses of the School District of Philadelphia use computers to document and maintain health data for all public school students (250,000) in over 250 schools. The transition from paper records to electronic records over a period of three years is described. Steps in the process are identified and potential organizational and personnel-related barriers and how they were overcome are discussed. Outcomes that have resulted from this transition include the ability to quantify and articulate information about the health of school children in Philadelphia and the contribution of school nurses to a comprehensive school health program.
