This presentation reports the findings from a statewide evaluation of the HIV speakers in the schools program conducted with support from the Oregon Health Division and the State Department of Education. A representative sample of schools was selected to answer a pre/post designed questionnaire to measure knowledge, attitudes and percieved risks of students. Data were collected from adult observers (parents, administrators, and teachers)that helped to identify the usefulness of the collaborative program for the purpose of supporting school districts in implementing mandated HIV/AIDS education. Results from the evaluation provide important information about the effectiveness of the program and also information for future justification of such programs in comprehensive school health education.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session the participants will be able to: 1. describe the impact of the HIV positive speakers program on the school aged child. 2. identify the program components and purpose of each. 3. Describe the barriers to delivering the program in the schools. 4. identify the collaborative benefits that a community based program can offer to a comprehensive school health environment
