Susan Stark, PhD, Program in Occupational Therapy, Washington University, Campus Box 8505, 4444 Forest Park Ave, St. Louis, MO 63108-2292, 314-286-1626, susys@ot-link.wustl.edu

Social participation for persons with disabilities is often based on the level of environmental supports that are available. The purpose of this research was to identify and measure the impact of specific environmental barriers and supports as they relate to the participation of persons with disabilities. Also, the specific result of a purely environmental intervention was analyzed to determine the impact the environment had on performance and on participation in the home. The project was a two-part study. The first part included recording and identifying typologies of barriers and supports. The second included identifying the outcome performance using repeated measures of an individual based on an environmental intervention. As a result of this project, the role of the environment in determining performance and participation of persons with disabilities in their home was identified. These results were, in part, based on the use of the MPS and EBFL.

Learning Objectives: 1. To identify specific facilitators and barriers in the environment affecting participation of individuals with general mobility. 2. To ascertain the effectiveness of home environmental modifications on the reduction of health disparities and the promotion of participation
