The Kansas Physical Disability Waiver program facilitates community living for Medicaid-eligible persons with disabilities through in-home supports. Participants may choose agency-directed or self-directed assistance, or a combination of the two. In a recent telephone survey of a sample of 160 participants, the Barriers to Health Promotion Activities for Disabled Persons (BHADP) scale (Becker, Stuifbergen & Sands, 1991) was used. The survey also included questions about participants' interest in health promotion activities. One fourth of the survey respondents reported experiencing seven of the eighteen barriers in the scale often or routinely. One third of the respondents using self-directed care indicated interest in health promotion activities. This presentation will present data related to health promotion from telephone interviews, including comparisons by demograpics and by choice of agency or self-directed assistance. The potential role of personal assistance in health promotion activities also will be discussed.

Learning Objectives: 1. List ten barriers to health promotion typically experienced by people with physical disabilities. 2. Discuss the role of personal assistance in health promotion for people with disabilities
