The symposium will examine factors that influence adolescent use of public services in a large, urban county. The data are from the Patterns of Care survey of a random sample of youth using mental health, substance use, child welfare, juvenile justice and public school SED services in San Diego County. All youth in the five sectors of care in fiscal year 1996-1997 were enumerated and the survey sample (n=1715)was randomly drawn from that list. Survey questions focused mainly on mental health, substance use, functional status, service use patterns, and barriers to care. Only data for those youth ages 13-18 (n=1025) are examined in this session. The symposium introduction will provide background data concerning the design of the POC enumeration and sampling procedures and a demographic profile of adolescents included in the sample. The first paper examines the need for and use of mental health services among adolescents in juvenile justice, child welfare and school-based SED programs. The second examines perceived barriers to mental health service utilization in the full sample of youth from five sectors of care. The third paper examines the relationship of conduct disorder and substance use to use of juvenile justice and alcohol/drug services. The fourth explores how acculturation levels may affect the relationships between behavioral problems and service use across the five sectors of care | ||||
