Substance Abuse Treatment Duration and Completion: What Matters?

Objectives: Treatment duration and completion have been shown to be important to positive outcomes for substance abuse clients. The objectives of this session are to (1) determine if service intensity in substance abuse treatment is associated with duration of treatment and completion, (2) identify client and facility level variables associated with treatment duration and completion for clients in specific age groups, (3) assess client and facility variables that are associated with variations in treatment duration and completion for men and women, (4) understand how treatment duration and completion are related to treatment costs, and (5) examine how methadone treatment practices affect treatment duration for methadone clients. Session Overview: This session uses data from the Alcohol and Drug Services Study, a nationally representative, stratified random sample of substance abuse treatment facilities, to examine factors that are associated with treatment duration and completion. Facility level data were collected from 2,400 non-correctional alcohol and drug treatment facilities. Client level data were abstracted from 6,000 client records at these facilities. Specific topics in this session look at how treatment duration and completion are related to service intensity, age of client, gender of client, cost of treatment, and methadone treatment practices
