Urban Men's Health

The purpose of this session is to review the progress of the 1998-2001 HRSA: Division of Nursing: Special Projects Grant awarded to La Salle University School of Nursing and its Neighborhood Nursing Center (LNNC). This innovative Special Projects Initiative targets underserved and uninsured urban male youth and adults residing in the Greater Philadelphia area. Five community organizations serving migrant workers, homeless men, public housing residents, recovering addicts and youth/men involved in organized sports are involved in this project. Graduate and undergraduate nursing students, faculty and staff have provided educational, outreach, primary care and case management services to more than 700 underserved, high risk males since the inception of the project. Select staff, including the Director, Nurse Coordinator, Nurse Practitioner and graduate students, will describe the creative evolution of this project, unique public health, outreach and educational strategies necessary to engage disenfranchised males. More than 60% of the male clients do not have health insurance. Current clinical data regarding chronic disease management are presented. Lessons learned, future work, public policy development and other critical issues regarding the needs of urban men are discussed. This interactive session is designed to engage participants in critical comment regarding the public health needs of urban men in this decade and strategies that work to improve their health and the wellbeing of the community
