The mission of the Bureau of Primary Health Care (BPHC) of the Health Services and Resources Adminstration is to increase access to comprehensive primary and preventive health care to improve the health status of underserved and vulnerable populations. BPHC programs serve over 10 million people per year, approximately 40 million of whom are uninsured. Another 34 percent are on Medicaid. Some 65 percent are members of racial and ethnic minorities. In many communities, clinicians and health centers supported by BPHC are the only source of care for underserved people. The purpose of the proposed session is to report on the evaluation of our efforts to increase access and to improve the health status of underserved populations. In the first presentation, we will report on effort to determine the top "neediest" communities in the country and their relationship as designated underserved areas. We have just completed the analyses of the data assessing the effectivness of the National Health Service Corps (the first time the government has ever evaluated this 25 year old program). The second and third presentations will report the many findings of this study of the Corps' ability to serve vulnerable populations. In the last presentation, we will report on our findings and methodological issues to assess the efficacy of community health center's promotion of early detection of breast cancer | ||||
