The Veterans Health Administration (VHA), the largest integrated health care system in the United States, is implementing patient centered measures of health status and health behaviors for monitoring quality and outcomes. The major purpose of “The 1999 Health Survey of Veterans,” the largest survey ever conducted by the VHA, was to provide baseline assessments of veterans health status and health behaviors for gauging the veteran’s health care needs. Follow up administrations will occur in order to determine baseline health status and future health outcomes. This session will review the results of this survey, administered by mail to 1.5 million veterans with a 60.1% response rate (n=845,387 completed questionnaires) using a modified Dillman approach. This survey included 2 waves administered over 10 weeks. The core assessments that went to the entire sample included the Veterans SF-36 and selected health behaviors, and one of five modules was administered to a random 20% of the sample (smoking/alcohol, diet/physical activity, satisfaction with the doctor/patient relationship, social support, and utilization/insurance). This session will present descriptive results of this large survey with a focus on the core health status assessments and modules. The implications of the findings will be described for the VHA and other integrated health care systems as they relate to quality of care and health outcomes in the context of a performance measurement system | ||||
