Healthy People 2010 provides the United States with a set of national goals and objectives to guide health improvement activities over the first decade of the 21st century. Released on January 25, 2000, the documents Healthy People 2010: Objectives for Improving Health (Volumes I and II) reflect the current knowledge base in prevention. The 28 focus areas and 467 objectives identify the most significant preventable threats to health and focus public and private sector efforts to address them. Developed over a four-year national collaborative effort, HP2010 reflects consensus about the direction that this country should take to prevent disease and promote health. HP2010's vision, "Healthy People in Healthy Communities," acknowledges that the health of the individual is almost inseparable from the health of the larger community. This session will review the content of four new focus areas in HP 2010–Health Communications; Arthritis, Osteoporosis and Chronic Back Conditions; Vision and Hearing; and Public Health Infrastructure. The presenters represent the lead agencies in the Department of Health and Human Services with responsibility for coordinating the development and achievement of these national objectives. The workgroup coordinators will review the goal of their focus area and the objectives (distinguishing between measurable and developmental objectives). They will describe trends, issues and disparities. They will talk about the partnerships that are necessary to attain the objectives and the next steps in implementation. The data challenges will also be examined. Participants will gain knowledge about the new focus areas of Healthy People 2010 and ideas for using the objectives to further health improvement in their own community | ||||
