The purpose of this session is to describe the importance of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in national nutrition policy formulation and evaluation and monitoring the health and nutritional status of the U.S. population. NHANES is the cornerstone of National Nutrition Monitoring and Related Research Program. NHANES data are used by Federal researchers to evaluate national food fortification policy and to formulate dietary guidelines for the nation. NHANES data provide baseline data for evaluating health and nutrition objectives in the Healthy People Health Objectives for the Nation, evaluating the impact of welfare reform and food assistance programs, and measuring changes that occur in health behaviors and lifestyle practices in response to public awareness and education campaigns The survey was redesigned in 1998; beginning with NHANES 1999, NHANES became a continuous, annual survey program. Linkages between NHANES and related Federal government surveys, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals (CSFII) are being designed. The new generation of NHANES offers exciting possibilities to assess the changing health and nutrition needs of the U.S. population by capitalizing on advances in laboratory technology, clinical research, and data processing and information technology | ||||
