Improving Physicians' Training in Nutrition: The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute's Nutrition Academic Award

Eight of the ten leading causes of death in the United States are nutritionally related. Nutrition counseling can be effective in changing dietary habits and should be a key component in the delivery of preventive services by primary care providers. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that physicians provide nutrition counseling and a referral as a standard part of their practice and a strategy for primary prevention of disease. Moreover, the Year 2010 objectives target an increase in the proportion of primary care practitioners who provide nutrition assessment and counseling or referral to qualified nutritionists or dietitians. Unfortunately, there are many barriers to physicians providing nutrition counseling for patients. One important barrier is the lack of nutrition education in medical schools and residency training. Thus, the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute established the Nutrition Academic Award, which provides funding to US medical schools to improve the nutrition training of physicians. The objectives of this session are to: 1. describe and discuss the progress of the Nutrition Academic Award; 2. discuss the development of national curriculum objectives for nutrition training in medical schools; 3. describe innovative teaching methods to train medical students and physicians about nutrition; and 4. discuss the development and testing of a nutrition assessment tool for use in physician offices
