War and Public Health: "Collateral Damage" To Vulnerable PopulationsHealth Disparities

This session will focus on the impact of wars and other forms of violence on women, children, the elderly, minorities, the ill, and other vulnerable populations. It will explore the impacts of civil war in Africa and ethnic war in Kosovo as well as the Taliban's war on women. It will examine the continuing impact of economic santions on vulnerable populations in Cuba, Iraq, and elsewhere. It will provide an update on the international campaign to ban landmines. And it will also include an update on issues related to nuclear weapons and national missile defense. Presentations will emphasize the roles that public health professional can play in minimizing the impact of war and other forms of violence on vulnerable populations and in preventing war and other forms of violence. By the end of the session, attendees will be able to: 1. Describe current issues with regard to war and other forms of violence and their impact on vulnerable populations. 2. Describe roles that public health professionals can play in minimizing the impact of war and other forms of violence on vulnerable populations, and in preventing war and other forms of violence
