The Effect Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) Has Had On The Meat Inspection System And The Meat Industry In Britain

In 1985, Spongiform Encepalopathy was diagnosed in a cow brain at the Central Veterinary Laboratory in England. This was the beginning of a series of events which subsequently resulted in radical changes to both the Meat Inspection System and the meat industry in the United Kingdom. This paper summarises the BSE story so far. It describes the measures which have been put in place to safeguard human health, and the changes which have occurred in the inspection of meat for human consumption in the United Kingdom. The effect BSE has had on the meat industry in the United Kingdom will also be considered
