Asthma and the Environment

The presenters will discuss both indoor and outdoor air pollutants which can trigger asthma. Common indoor asthma triggers discussed will include mold, dust mites, pests, pets, and environmental tobacco smoke. Common outdoor air asthma triggers discussed will include fine particles, ozone, and hydrogen sulfide. Public health prevention efforts to educate the public on outdoor and indoor asthma triggers will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives: 1) Learn about strategies for multiethnic coalition building to decrease pediatric asthma. 2) Learn about and discuss potential common chemical asthmagens. 3) Learn about the health effects of particulate matter & ozone, and discuss key policy issues. 4) Learn about and discuss the relationship between high outdoor levels of hydrogen sulfide, other air toxics, and asthma. 5) Learn about and discuss the role of environmental exposures in the etiology of childhood asthma.
