Population, Health, and Environment: Why Synergies Matter and Impact People's Livelihood

Analysis and evaluation of the ways in which population – health- environment synergies take place at the community and project level have been a challenge for those working in integrated projects. Several tools have been developed to help evaluate population-health-environment indicators and to demonstrate the ways in which these concepts interact. Panelist will present several of these tools and discuss the results of the implementation of the instruments in developing countries. Tools include analysis of health and conservation indicators conducted by the Biodiversity Support Project and Conservation International’s Healthy Communities Initiative; and participatory action research carried out by the University of Michigan's Population-Environment Impact Assessment Project. In addition, program action design will be discussed, based on a household level quantitative survey conducted by USAID's Environmental Health Project in Madagascar. Finally, the experience of Population Action International and Conservation International in using geographic information systems (GIS) technology to map both population and conservation indicators will be presented. These tools have all been used to better inform program design for integrated population and environment projects.
