| In this session, representatives from the University of North Carolina and University of Pennsylvania graduate schools of public health, as well as the Public Health Program Office of the Centers for Disease Control will share lessons learned in meeting distance learning challenges and issues. Challenges discussed will include those related to converting traditional courses to the web, such as: gathering appropriate expertise, reviewing content, identifying instructional strategies, developing additional content needed to support the web-based format and organizing materials for a flexible learning environment, as well as the challenge of creating a web training course (identified through repeated needs assessments) that could be adapted for public health employees in a variety of jurisdictions and job responsibilities. Issues highlighted will include: the use of a range of methods and modes to address training needs of different public health audiences without allowing technologies to dictate educational methods, the critical roles of technology and instructional design in the development and support of distance education opportunities, and the necessary technology—from server farms, to network infrastructure, to 24-hour help lines—needed to mount online educational programs. | ||||

Recognize some of the similarities and differences in presentation of the same content across a variety of dissemination approaches; 3.
