Community-Based Public Health Interventions: The California Experience

Major interventions in community-based public health have been taking place in California for over a decade. These interventions, which look to communities themselves for focus and direction, serve as the basis for lessons of value to community-based public health interventions everywhere. The session will place primary emphasis on two California programs: (1) the Health Improvement Initiative (HII), a five-year, $20 million effort sponsored by the California Wellness Foundation (TCWF), and the Partnership for Public Health (PPH), a five-year, $37 million effort funded by the California Endowment. Both these programs provide financial and technical support to communities committed to systems change, local capacity-building, and resident participation. Together, the HII and PPH support approximately 65 separate communities and public health departments. Papers in the proposed session are based on planning and evaluation connected with the initiatives. Observation and evaluation of the broad range of programs supported has made possible a comprehensive examination of planning, implementation, and potential of community-based public health. 4 12 minute presentations and 15 minute discussion
