This project used the Participatory Action Research methods of Photovoice and storytelling to examine the experiences of female to male transsexuals’ as they tried to access health care. Five self-identified female to male transsexuals (FTM) were recruited through the assistance of a local FTM organization and through word of mouth. The data was collected through the use of photographs taken by the participants depicting their experiences of accessing health care. The participants then told the stories of each of the photographs used in the project. The photographs and the stories that were told by participants of accessing health care illuminated the problems that exist in the current health care system with regard to transgender health care. The project stimulated dialogue among the participants and their colleagues and peers about their health care needs. The images and stories revealed the harsh realities of accessing health care as a transgender person, yet also brought forward the perseverance and activism of this group of FTMs as they attempted to navigate the health care system and helped others in their community do the same. The results of this project fills a gap in the existing literature on transgender access to health care, by focusing specifically on the FTM community, and by documenting the vulnerability, invisibility, perseverance, and activism of the transgender community. This project created a foundation for future research of transgender health care. The photographs and stories also have the potential to impact policy with regard to transgender health care access.
